Nowadays a lot of companies use dynamic web pages: web pages that create dynamic content on-the-fly, based on the specific parameters that are being asked to be displayed. The dynamic technology is used because of the simplicity of updating the content without having to go through the multiple lines of HTML code and manually change the content. But how does the use of dynamic web pages influence the search engines ranking of the website? Do search engines index dynamic web pages?

In most cases dynamic web pages present a significant problem for search engines because the content of these pages is frequently hidden from the search engine spider programs. That may result in the situation where the dynamic web pages are not being indexed. What can be done in the situation when dynamic web pages are used is to allow the most valuable content to be evident to search engine spiders. Remember to implement the basic rules of search engine optimization: the existence of quality content, proper keywords, descriptive Title and Meta tags, and multiple links to your web pages.

Search engines spiders can recognize the dynamic pages (sometimes through the structure of the URL text) and in many case they will try to avoid indexing these page because of the possible problems that may occur. There are some exceptions: search engines that can index the dynamic page content if you submit your dynamic pages with all the attributes in the URL to the search engine. Infoseek and HotBot search engines belong to this category.

To make sure your dynamic web pages get indexed, you need to try several techniques. For example, if you have static pages in your website, you can add high-quality descriptive links to the most important dynamic pages. Creating a web page with a site map that incorporates these links is a excellent idea. These links simplify the indexing process for the search engine spiders and eliminate many possible problems both for the spider programs and for your website.

However, many search engine spiders may not even try to index your page because of the way your dynamic pages’ URL looks like and the presence of the query spring in the URL. There are some complicated technical methods that will allow you change the way your URL looks like but these methods are very specific to the technology used for creating dynamic web pages and will take time and some programming knowledge to implement.
